About Us

Spire House Developments (Spire) is a property developer, operating primarily in the south of England. We strive to build traditional looking new homes with contemporary interior layouts and stylish finishes.

Spire work with a range of partners on new build developments and refurbishments, as well as providing development finance.

A brief history

The company was founded in 2004 by Steve Abbley in a bid to utilise retained profits from other investments and put them to work. Initially specialising in development finance, the company grew to work on partnership arrangements and then managing its own developments entirely. We now work with development partners in a variety of ways and offering an array of services, as well as undertaking construction projects entirely in-house.

The company evolution has brought about a much more active role in developing, with a particular focus on selling off-plan and trying to involve buyers during the build stage, to increase customer satisfaction and speed up the quantity of projects undertaken.

What We Do

Spire work on a range of projects, although focus predominantly on new home developments of up to forty units. Our construction managers and development partners typically have over twenty years’ experience and have produced a range of new build, extensions and conversions to a fantastic standard. We only build a selection of unique and contemporary homes, to a finish that we would expect ourselves if we were buying a home. Every decision taken at planning and design stage revolves around you, the buyer. We strive to maximise space and plan our layouts to suit a modern lifestyle. We also take consultation on all kitchens and bathrooms, and can offer a range of styles to suit.

Spire aim to deliver high quality, traditional style homes with choice, in the simplest manner possible. We’d like to be seen as a friendly and trustworthy, local developer. As part of this aim, we only use quality local tradesman with whom we have built relationships for many years and who continue to work with us today.

We don't just build homes, we also provide funding to other developers around the UK. This includes both senior debt and mezzanine finance on a variety of projects.

Greenhill

Built in a small rural hamlet in 2015, Greenhill was the highest value project for a single dwelling that Spire House Developments had ever undertaken. Supervised by D Rogers Construction, the project involved the demolition of a small, single storey property and construction of a 2,700 sq ft detached dormer bungalow.

Greenhill has a country feel with impressive, modern finishes including an oak-framed balcony to showcase the stunning countryside views and fully extending bi-fold doors from the open-plan kitchen/breakfast room.

Features include oak flooring throughout, a wood-burning stove, granite worktops and luxurious en suites for each of the four double bedrooms. The property is finished to an extremely high standard and sold for a fully justified £800,000.

Callas Hill

Located in the sought after area of Wanborough, Swindon, Callas Hill was a unique development in partnership with Pars Developments. The project involved extensive groundworks as well as the installation of two retaining walls, to hold the surrounding earth. The property is over 1,800 sq ft and features an ‘upside down’ internal layout.

There are four bedrooms on the ground floor, two of which have en suites. The first floor boasts an impressive fully integrated kitchen, and bridge over into the garden area. The large living room is full of natural light by day and with the addition of a wood burning stove there would be a cosy ambience by night.

The Sidings

After the huge success of an initial phase of 10 properties within the heart of Shepton Mallet, we decided to develop a further 13 houses at The Sidings. With the project commencing in autumn 2015, phase two of this bespoke development completed in autumn 2016. The four bedroomed homes were an instant hit with families and first-time buyers alike, with many making use of the government-backed Help to Buy scheme.

These homes are built to the highest specification including 'triple glazing' throughout, engineered oak flooring, solid oak doors, fully integrated kitchen appliances: induction hob, dishwasher, washing machine, oven and grill, as well as having a modern Worcester gas fired combination boiler. Each property benefits from off street parking and an enclosed rear garden.

Apple Meadow View

Located on the Mendip Hills, Leigh upon Mendip was the perfect setting for our Apple Meadow View development. Situated between Wells, Bath and Bristol, the site is the ideal retreat for the rural homebuyer. A range of 2, 3 and 4 bedroomed homes, all built with natural Mendip stone to the front elevations and boast stunning countryside views to the rear.

The internal specification was also the highest available with 'triple glazing' throughout, engineered oak flooring, solid oak doors, fully integrated kitchen appliances: induction hob, dishwasher, washing machine, oven and grill, as well as having a modern Worcester gas fired combination boiler. Large brick paved driveways and attractive front landscaping made this development very appealing.

Steve Abbley Chairman

Steve has previously held positions of finance director, senior vice president and managing director of a multi-national relocation and property services group, before establishing Spire House Developments in 2004. Steve also owns the successful part exchange company, Quick Move Properties and has over 30 years’ experience in the property industry.

Steve’s focus is very much on capital growth, aiming to build upon the knowledge and experience acquired from previous construction projects to maintain a successful and sustainable development company. Overseeing the finance, marketing and project management teams allows Steve the opportunity to build upon relationships with construction partners and other industry professionals.

David Simmons Director of Land and New Homes

David is responsible for the successful management and progression of new build and renovation construction projects. This includes everything from land acquisition and development financing to overseeing the off-plan sales process.

Starting out in Quick Move Properties, David moved to Spire House Developments in 2015, having graduated from the University of Bristol achieving an MSc in Management the previous year. David also dedicates time to continuous professional development, acquiring qualifications via RICS Academy in Quantity Surveying and Project Management.

John Haugh Finance Director

Formerly, John worked as senior vice president of finance for an international relocation company. John has been overseeing the finance departments for both Quick Move Properties and Spire House Developments since 2004.

John’s role entails overseeing the development finance availability and managing company budgets to ensure funds are available to complete both on time and at the quality specified.

Francesca Abbley Property Development Manager

Francesca joined Spire in 2016 and has since successfully managed a number of renovation projects across the south of England.

Francesca manages the interior design on our New Home developments, encompassing design layouts, fixtures and fittings and colour schemes – every detail is important to ensure customer satisfaction.

In addition, Francesca has overseen the setup and development of the soft play and café business, Little Centurions, developed by Spire House Developments in 2020. This is also an area of potential growth for the business.

Jodie Neal Administrator

Jodie works on the development team across several areas including construction support, compliance, finance and cost tracking, she also assists with the purchase order system and helps deal with a range of supplier and subcontractor queries.

Jodie has a background in New Home Sales and is always looking to improve the home-buying experience for our customers.

Joe Da Cunha Finance Assistant

Joe is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day running of the Spire House Developments accounts department. This includes managing the invoice process, payments and assisting with financial administration. Joe is also studying for his AAT Level 4 as part of his journey to become an accountant and dedicates much of his free time to achieve this certification.

Linda Smith Office Manager

In addition to managing the day to day running of our head offices in Royal Wootton Bassett to ensure work practises are as efficient as they can be, Linda also supports the Directors in achieving their objectives across all business areas.

Previous work in estate agency and for an international relocation and property management company has made Linda the perfect problem solver. As a result of this, Linda is highly valued in her support for the procurement procedures for Spire as well as the organisation of management company services.

Tamsin Duddy Property Purchase Manager

Tamsin oversees the property purchase department and has extensive legal experience, having bought in hundreds of properties in her career. This involves everything from Part Exchange offers to working with the team on new site appraisals where existing properties are involved. It is this skill set that allows us to ensure we offer the best possible prices on both development sites and existing properties.

Tamsin has worked in this area for over 16 years and is a key figure in terms of risk assessment for the company.

Stuart Bell Marketing Manager

Before joining Quick Move Properties and Spire, Stuart worked in the Marketing Departments for a variety of companies including a household consumer goods group, a magazine publisher and a mail order seed company.

Stuart currently manages the marketing department for Quick Move Properties and Spire, and oversees the company’s brand and messaging.
